So off we go, Covid still with us but with some extra precautions and paperwork Jack and Kevin were back over. They caught some nice fish last year and it didn’t take them long to get amongst them again with 5 fish the first night including a cracker at 134lb for Kevin.
Kevin had another “Ton” with a 126lb so a great start …. Jack waiting patiently for his first over the 100lb Mark.
We fished at Figgy for 3 more nights…. plenty of fish and some great scraps with the average at 50/60lb but no more biggies. We had planned on having a day up at Mequinenza so that’s what we did. We managed to take advantage of there not being too many people about and got into a swim opposite one of the islands. Rowing your baits out is the way to go here, it didn’t take long with all hands on deck that we had 6 rods out. Rigs were made up with a 6/0 hook with 6 and 4 pellets. Half an hour past and Kevin was in….. typical Mequi bite with the rod slamming over.. then the slack line.. then the rod hooping over again.. good fight and nice to get off the mark.
We didn’t have to wait long for Jack to get a run…. same sort of bite, Jack pulled up to a very angry fish… it shot off towards the island, as it made it near it came to the surface some 150 odd yards out, huge crash with its tail and the hook pulled!!!! It sent Jack flying backwards what with so much pressure applied. Ouch….. that gut feeling and disappointment when you know that was a good fish lost… We got the rods back out but nothing happened. We sheltered from the heat through the afternoon and reset the rods for the evening. 10-30pm was our wrap it up time and that was fast approaching. Such a good start as well and Jack still searching for his “Ton”. We brought 2 rods in and were counting down the minutes when literally at 10-29 rod 2 roared off. Jack was in, it came in a little bit too quickly really and we were convinced it wasn’t going to be Jacks week. The deepest water is under the rod tip in this swim and it’s there that this fish “woke up”. 5 mins of plodding had now turned into a real battle…. great great scrap was had, Jacks poor back lol…. but the “last knockings” had produced again and Jack had at last hit is goal 104lb.
What a great weeks fishing, plenty of laughs and food as well, nice to get going and look forward to seeing Jack back again later in the year.
